Mumbai: The NaMo app, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has not been downloaded as many times as the app that his predecessor, Manmohan Singh, released three years ago. The app, which allows people to interact with the PM and get updates on important events, has become a key tool in campaigning for Modi, who has challenged all his opponents to match his popularity, which saw record voter turnout in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The app has been downloaded between 1 million and 2 million times from the Google Play Store, according to senior software engineer, Varun Kapoor, who helped develop it. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also been tweeting from his Twitter handle @Dev_Fadnavis. This year, the state has made NaMo's app mandatory for chief ministers and BJP state unit members, deshmukh said. "This app has been an important tool in connecting the public with the PM. When we reached this decision, all top BJP leaders gave their suggestions. We made it a resolution of the state party unit. In Maharashtra, BJP MLAs and MPs are giving feedback as well," he said. Apart from Maharashtra, the app is mostly used in Uttar Pradesh, said a senior officer from the state unit.
